As a major employer in our Houston and South Texas markets, HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division of which HCA Houston Healthcare is a part of, continues to be a significant contributor to our local economy by not only employing a large number of colleagues, but also investing in financial support – through taxes, charitable contributions, and charity care. At HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division, we incurred $438 million in taxes, $437 million in uncompensated care in 2021.
As one of the region’s largest healthcare systems, HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division recognizes the importance of giving back to the communities we serve. Through our community engagement efforts, we invested $2.7 million to community organizations. We are engaged with community partners such as American Heart Association, March of Dimes, the City of Houston and the Center for Houston’s Future, and many more. A strong advocate for the next generation of healthcare professionals, HCA Houston Healthcare is also a major supporter of the University of Houston College of Nursing and the Tillman J. Fertitta College of Medicine and local area high schools.
Additionally, our colleagues have a strong tradition of volunteerism and community outreach. HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division colleagues volunteered over 9,000 hours for 251 nonprofit organizations in 2021.
Committing to food security in our communities, our HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division colleagues collected 11,830 pounds producing 9,866 meals for 13 food banks. In October 2021, HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division hosted its second annual “Crush the Crisis” event in partnership with local law enforcement agencies, collecting 1,146 pounds of unused and expired medications in support of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Take Back Day. HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division is also proud to have partnered with EVERFI to champion positive mental wellness, and provided digital Mental Wellness Basics courses to more than 1,900 students and 55 teachers active across more than 31 schools in low-to-moderate income communities.
